This project will be prepared with Access (or equivalent Database).
èBefore you start this project, thoroughly read pages 12-25 (Section 2) and 282-286 to gain a sense of the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) standards and performance indicators for your grade level in the book National Educational Technology Standards for Students: Connecting Curriculum and Technology (2000).
Create a database application that will be of use instructionally. Decide on a topic for the grade level you are teaching. This database will serve as a learning tool, storage tool, and research tool.
This project will result in an instructionally useful database. You will be submitting:
(a) a database printout which lists all records and fields in the database (fill in all the fields for nine of the eighteen records)
(b) a database print-out based on a two level filter
(c) create a special report from your database
(d) a description of your learning activity (see Appendix C)
1) Description of Learning Activity
Use a word processor to write a description of your learning activity (see Appendix C). Items 1-8 are more global and you should address the items as if you were writing a unit plan. Item 9 is a specific one-day lesson, typically the introductory lesson to the topic. Your description should include:
1. Topic/Subject
2. Grade level
3. Illinois Learning Standards
4. National Educational Technology Standards for Students
5. A rationale - this should address why this topic would be good to use with the students. This includes information on the following items:
a. Why students would be interested in this topic.
b. What students will gain by learning this topic? (e.g., What learning and/or study skills, concepts, and/or content would they obtain or reinforce?)
6. Goals - What are the reasons to teach this topic? For example the unit that encompasses the Dinomania database may have three broad goals.
a. Students will gain an in depth understanding of the various geological periods and the warm and cold-blooded animals that lived during those periods.
b. Students will develop library and web based research skills.
c. Students will develop the skills necessary to write a research report.
7. Purpose of database.
8. Student use of the database.
9. Description - how you will introduce the topic (leading to the eventual development of this database) to your students. You may want to describe just the first day's lesson you would engage your students in to introduce them to the topic (This is not a lesson for them to learn to use the database). This should include:
a. A thorough description of the lesson your students will be engaged in.
b. How you will evaluate that your students have learned from this lesson.
c. Cite the resources you used to help you develop the database. See Appendix D for APA style references.
2) Structure of the database
Your database must contain 18 or more records based on your topic. Half the records (9) will have all fields filled completely in with accurate information. This will help you determine whether your database will function properly to insure student learning. This will also allow you to check if your fields contain discrete information as you develop the fields and learn to use the sorting filter. Finally this will help me to see what you have in mind as I read through your project, its intent, and structure.
3) Resources
Bring whatever books or notes you need to help you gain the knowledge you need to develop a learning database. Feel free to discuss your topic with me.
